Floss
by Kim Lewis
When Floss, a Border collie, is sent to a sheep farm for training as a sheep dog, he dreams of the days he played with children in the park. One day as he guards the sheep, the farmer's children come nearby with their kickball, and he is pulled away from his duty. The farmer realizes that Floss also needs the companionship of children. Beautiful, realistic paintings of mountains, sheep, dogs, and people make up for a somewhat fragmented, anthropomorphized story. -- Reading level: Ages 4-8, Paperback Reprint edition (January 1994)

Lessons from a Sheepdog
by Phillip Keller, W. Phillip Keller
This marvelous book tells how a car-chasing, useless pup was transformed into a magnificient dog. Anecdotes of the process are used as parables to show us how even some of our worst characteristics can be a blessing, when we stop trying to use them in self-serving ways and use them to serve God's will and purposes. For anyone attempting to train a stockdog. -- Hardcover (May 1988)

Nop's Trials
by Donald McCaig
I enjoyed Nop's Trials but found the story a bit depressing. The ending was satisfying though. I had difficulty with the dog's chat as they spoke like Quakers do.."thou art a good dog" etc..but I got used to it. However, this dog dialogue could have possibly been left out. The author has written very sensitively and honestly but I felt he could have used a bit more decorum in one part of the book that depicts sexual intimacy between the main character and his wife. Other than that it is a novel of some integrity and you can learn some things about Border Collies which I found interesting. A good weekend read. -- Paperback - 328 pages (September 1992)
