Breeding Philosophy
MY SPRINGER PHILOSOPHY I have had
Springers for about 20 years now and have been trying to breed a
dog that is “livable”. I am aiming for a dog that is good to
look at, and a pleasure to live with and structurally sound. My
dogs are generally not overly hyper (once they get past the puppy
stage). My foundation bitch does hunt and this has been passed
down to many of her children and grandchildren. They can do well
in obedience as well. All my breeding stock has Orthopedic
Foundation for Animals (OFA) ratings and are eye clear of any
signs of inheritable disease. OFA rates hip x-rays for hip
dysplasia (where the ball and socket joint do not fit properly).

OFA gives ratings of Excellent, Good, Fair, Mildly Dysplastic and
Severely Dysplastic. I am only breeding dogs with ratings of Good
or Excellent. This does not guarantee that there will not be
puppies that may have hip dysplasia some time in the future, but
it does increase the odds of having good hips. Springers can have
hereditary eye diseases, which can have little or no effect on
vision to blinding. I do not breed anything that is not checked by
a veterinary ophthalmologist. They do not show any signs of any of
these diseases, but again that is no guarantee that we will not
get it down the road. Again it just increases chances of having
eye clear litters. |
