[Welcome to A Dog Owner's Network. www.adognet.com] The Great American Dog Show Game Alvin Grossman, R. Annabel Rathman
the Author had long felt that lack of a good information program was severely hindering the dog game. Looking back on his own thirty plus years in the fancy he wondered how he had made it from a struggling novice to journeyman exhibitor to blase top-winning Specials owner to the exalted ranks of dog show judging. he was well aware that it was NOT because of a well-thought-out plan. He finally concluded that it was only because he had been tenacious and has asked questions of everyone in sight that he had finally arrived. In an effort to impart some of the knowledge he has gained he has written this book. To make it easy to absorb he has used levity and cartoons. But the subject matter is important. Read it and learn...but best of all enjoy it! the Dog Writer's Association nominated this book for Best Book of the Year in its category Paperback - 63 pages (July 1997)

[Welcome to A Dog Owner's Network. www.adognet.com] Show Me! : A Dog Showing Primer by D. Caroline Coile
Dog shows are phenomenally popular, immensely competitive, and often perplexing for beginners. Show Me offers easy-to-follow tips and words of wisdom for those new to this challenging sport. Author D. Caroline Coile is quick to point out that the average pet pooch (although lovely in your eyes) will not make it in professional competitions. Most show dogs are bred for this very purpose, and the book includes practical advice for selecting and raising your top dog. (Can you really handle that Great Dane?) Coile divulges her immense knowledge of competition culture, from grooming tips and obedience training to the psychology of dealing with competition loss. Crisp color photographs and expertly drawn pencil sketches of that perfect show dog will capture the imagination of any would-be competitor. Paperback - 152 pages (January 1997)

[Welcome to A Dog Owner's Network. www.adognet.com] Born to Win : Breed to Succeed by Patricia V. Craige
Anne Roslin-Williams described Pat Craige's Born to Win--Breed to Succeed as "one of the best dog books ever"! High praise indeed, and fully justified, I can proimise you...Books about breeding tend to either be very basic, dealing with the mechanics of whelping and rearing...or to be extremely technical. This book, however, is not only highly readable, indeed unputdownable, but Mrs. Craige never 'talks down' to her readers. She assumes that they have similar goals to her own and, unlike so many of those at the very top of their profession, she is happy to pass on her secrets..." Mrs. Craige raises Vin-Melca Elkhounds in the USA, where "her Elkhounds have been number one in this country for almost 30 years." In her book, Paticia Craige "gets various top names in other breeds to explain how they pick puppies and then gives sage advice on how to get the best from them in training, conditioning and problem-sorting." This extraordinary book is "for anyone whose aim is to be seriously competitive in the dog world." Simon Parsons closes his article with his lament that, "I only wish that someone as successful in the British dog scene would write something comparable--whether or not you believe that over here are the best dogs, judges and shows, America is now certainly one up on us as far as dog books are concerned." [Welcome to A Dog Owner's Network. www.adognet.com] K-9 : Structure and Terminology by Edward M. Gilbert, Thelma R. Brown
I found this book to give me a better understanding of the movement of a dog in the show ring. It describes quite well the parts of the skeleton and how they relate to this movement. The full impact of the information is probably best used in a class where examples can be shown. Even with this shortcoming I found I increased my understanding and knowlege of conformation show movement. Hardcover - 233 pages (December 1995)
