Black Star, Bright Dawn by Scott O'DellMost young girls' experiences never involve hunting bearded seals on the ice, even within the Alaskan Eskimo culture. In Scott O'Dell's gripping novel, Bright Dawn is an exception. In her father's eyes, she became his son's replacement ever since her brother drowned. When Bright Dawn is 18 years old, her father, recently injured, insists that she take his place in the Iditarod, the famous Alaskan dogsled race covering more than a thousand miles between Anchorage and Nome. Unflinching, yet trembling in her mukluks, she faces her challenge head-on. Bright Dawn proves herself to be a strong, courageous heroine--crossing rivers, mountain ranges, and vast stretches of frozen tundra--with her team of dogs, including the lead Black Star. While the rush of wind and relentless, blinding stretches of ice are exhilarating, the dangers involved make Bright Dawn realize that it's not only the race, but her life that she's entrusting to her team of dogs. O'Dell, author of the Newbery Award-winning Island of the Blue Dolphins, has created an intense, suspenseful, clearly written adventure story that's sure to capture the imagination of young readers and take them for a blustery ride. Born to Pull by Bob Cary, Gail de MarckenSled dogs are a mysterious breed-unrelentingly independent. At play, they may look like any other pup, but at work they bear no resemblance to others of their species. Investigate how the fierce bond between musher and dog slowly develops until the team fuses and unleashes its collective power on the trail. Learn how these roles occasionally reverse when a "green" musher learns to trust a sled dog's experience and innate pulling instinct. Born to Pull is written by famed North Woods author Bob Cary. Each chapter features expert insight into dog sled team dynamics that complement Bob's lively stories about life on the trail. These narratives are vividly brought to life with stunning illustrations by northern watercolor artist Gail de Marcken who spent several months traveling with dog sled teams. Inside these pages, you'll learn everything you always wanted to know about sled dogs and their sport! Hardcover - 96 pages (October 1998) The best price for this book is at Amazon.com. Winterdance : The Fine Madness of Running the
Iditarod by Gary Paulsen by Mari, Hoe-RaittoPaulsen's survival adventure is in the tradition of Jack London: one man and his dog team together against the Arctic wilderness. With everything stripped down to the barest essentials, Paulsen finds elemental connection with a world beyond cities, family, and work. His prose is spare and physical; at its best, it has the fluid simplicity of Hemingway. On the other hand, there is too much reliance on the pattern of menace beneath the surface. Paulsen is always teetering on the edge of a precipice, waiting to be dragged, dropped, crashed, frozen, torn apart, and buried alive. Fortunately, however, he also has a sense of farce, and there's a lot of the Marx Brothers here. As Paulsen makes clear from the start, the Iditarod race is itself an absurd undertaking--to run with a dog team for 1,800 miles through unimaginable cold, "winds beyond belief, roaring waters and deadly dreams." What's most moving is his behavior at the end of the race: "I didn't want to go in," he says. Armchair travelers will understand. Race Across Alaska : First Woman to Win the Iditarod
Tells Her Story by Libby Riddles, Tim JonesLibby Riddles proves that being a woman in the middle of Alaska s traitorous terrain can be a blessing, especially when flying behind a pack of healthy enthusiastic dogs. Although this recount of the 1985 Iditarod wasn t written to prove a point about the strength and determination of women, the perseverance of the team with Libby in the lead illustrated the inner drive that makes completing a daunting task like the Iditarod possible. In her own words she describes the incredible task of racing a pack of sled dogs across Alaska from Anchorage to Nome while facing unbelievable odds including ferocious weather, exhaustion, doggie runs, sneaky sweepers, and the ever elusive trail markers. This book gives a behind-the-scenes type of look inside the mind of a determined and intelligent musher making moment-to-moment decisions while coming within inches from mortal danger for herself and her dogs. Libby s story will make you want to harness up your beagle and set out for the tundra of Alaska! Paperback - 240 pages (March 1988) The best price for this book is at Amazon.com.
